Story & Clue
[Cheerful colonial drum and fife music plays]
Betsy Ross: Do come in, but watch your step! I may have dropped a few pins on the floor. I’m knee-deep in blue wool for the new naval uniforms. After I am done, I’ve been tasked with a very secret and very special project: sewing a new flag for our united colonies.
[Patriotic orchestral music plays]
Betsy Ross: General Washington himself brought me a sketch, though I’ve suggested he change those six-pointed stars to five. They’re much easier to snip with a single cut of the shears.
[Sound of rhythmic metallic snipping]
Phyllis: I’m Phyllis, and I see to the laundry and fabrics here. The poor man was covered in mud from a long ride, so I told him he must let that clay dry completely before brushing it off his fine green coat.
[Sound of a stiff brush scrubbing fabric]
Phyllis: Otherwise, he’d ruin the color. He thanked me for the advice and took notes about our silk fabric pricing with a silver quill, which I suspect is the one you’re looking for.
Betsy Ross: He mentioned he was heading toward Christ Church to find a moment of quiet before the official signing began.
Delegate Voice: Thank you, ladies, for your assistance today. I shall make my way to the church but plan to return to make a purchase.
Betsy Ross: You might still catch him if you hurry!
[Drum and fife music plays]
Hint
Aide: So, Betsy and Phyllis saw him plain as day, did they? And he wasn't interested in her blue wool at all, because he was already dressed in green. 'Tis a fine, bold color for a gentleman. Now we're getting somewhere.
