Story & Clue

[Church bells ring in the distance, followed by somber, choral-like orchestral music]
Sexton: Peace be with you. I am the Sexton of Christ Church. We are the spiritual home for many members of the Continental Congress; some call us "The Nation's Church." If you are seeking the gentleman with the silver pen, you have just missed him. I noticed the exquisite quill when he signed our guestbook.
[Sound of a pen scratching on paper]
Sexton: He came into this sanctuary to find a moment of quiet reflection. He sat right there in that pew, praying for the great people of our thirteen colonies.
Delegate Voice: May Divine Providence ever guide and bless this rising republic. Grant the people of this land the wisdom and virtue to preserve our independence for all posterity. Amen.
Sexton: He was a striking sight to see. To protect his face from the bright sunlight and the intense July summer heat, he wore a green silk veil draped from his hat, covering his features. He has very sensitive skin, you see, and the veil acts like a special shield to guard him from the sun as he travels.
Sexton: I spoke with him briefly. He headed out the north door just a moment ago.
[Sound of a heavy wooden door creaking and closing]
Sexton: If you run, you’ll find him there at his desk, ready to sign for our freedom.
[Grand church bells ring out a melody]

Hint

Aide: Well, look at you lot. What did the Sexton have to say? A green veil draped over his face, you say? Now, isn't that just the cleverest thing you've ever heard? While the rest of us are out here turning red as lobsters in this July sun, that gentleman has found a way to stay cool and keep his sensitive skin shaded. Well, that's the final piece of the tale. Run now to the State House. You've found your man, so go get John Hancock's silver quill!
