Story & Clue

[Bright, colonial-style orchestral music plays]
Tavern Keeper: Welcome, travelers! Shake the dust of the road off your clothes and take a seat.
[Sound of a bustling tavern in the background]
You’ve come to the right place. Half of the Continental Congress is usually in here, debating the King over a bowl of pepper pot soup.
Background Delegate 1: We are no longer Englishmen anymore, but Americans!
Background Delegate 2: Taxation without representation is theft!
Background Delegate 3: We are capable of making our own laws!
Tavern Keeper: Looking for a particular gentleman, you say? Aye, I served him right at that corner table. He ordered a glass of Madeira wine. You know, we colonists can’t get enough of the stuff. He was a quiet one, but I noticed him busy at work. He pulled out a magnificent silver quill—the very one you’re looking for, I’d wager. He seemed to be writing notes about the great things happening here in Philadelphia.
[Sound of a pen scratching on paper]
Tavern Keeper: I remember him well because, frankly, he was a breath of fresh air. Most of the men who come in here are lawyers or law professors—men who spend all day arguing over theories and statutes until my ears ring. He didn’t use a single "wherefore" or "heretofore" the whole time.
Tavern Keeper: He paid his tab— [Sound of coins clinking]
Delegate Voice: That glass of Madeira hit the mark. It was exactly what I required, thank you.
Tavern Keeper: —tucked that silver pen back into his coat and left in quite a hurry. He said he wanted to visit the printing office to see the latest news.
[Drum and fife music plays]

Hint

Aide: Well, look at you lot emerging from the City Tavern. 'Tis a lively place surely, but full of wagging tongues and thick smoke. I've just had a whisper from the tavern girl, and she's told me the tavern owner gave us a fine lead. The gentleman we're after is not one of those stuffy lawyers or law professors always arguing over dusty books. He's a man of action, not just words.
