Story & Clue

[Upbeat drum and fife music plays]
Printer: Careful where you step! The ink is fresh, and we’re working double shifts. We’re pulling broadsides of the Declaration as fast as the press will allow. Never heard of a broadside? Well, it’s how we get the word out. It’s a large single sheet of paper, printed on one side with the biggest news of the day, so it can be tacked up in the streets for everyone to see. We have to get these posted so the people can see what their delegates have done this day!
[Background Crier:] Hear ye, hear ye! Can you read it? This document... Continental Congress... Independence! Freedom!
Printer: The man with the silver pen? Aye, he was just here. He was squinting at this very proof sheet to check the wording. Now, I see many of these delegates come in here—men like Dr. Franklin or Mr. Wythe—and they immediately reach for their silver-rimmed spectacles just to read a single line of type. But this gentleman? He did not need glasses. He had a sharp eye for detail. He looked a bit pale, though; said the ride had his stomach in a knot. He asked for the quickest way to the apothecary to find some peppermint for his ailment.
Delegate Voice: My stomach is sorely vexed. Can you show me the way to the apothecary?
Printer: You’ll find the shop just around the corner, marked by the sign of the mortar and pestle. Hurry now, before he moves on!

Hint

Aide: Mind the ink on your fingers now. That print shop is a messy bit of business, what with all the pressing and the clatter. But look here, we've gleaned a right helpful bit of truth from the printer. The gentleman you're tracking down does not wear glasses.
