To make rubber, the Olmec people would extract latex, a sticky liquid, from special trees called Castilla elastica or rubber trees. This liquid was then combined with the juice from morning glory plants that often grew nearby.  The morning glory juice contained a chemical that interacted with the solidified latex making it less brittle.
